There are various types of soap making molds: acrylic, plastic, wooden, or just build a mold yourself! You can be very creative with molds but there is a word of warning. CAUTION! Make sure your mold can withstand the caustic properties of lye and uncured soap. If your soap penetrates your mold, you could have a real mess! It could damage your table or counter top. You can buy molds at craft, discount, or home stores near you, find them on-line, in soap making kits, build them yourself, or just look for something sturdy around your house!

Some molds are made from plastic containers or acrylic. They can be found in numerous sizes and shapes with, individual, plain or decorative cavities. These molds are great to use, especially, for beginners. You just pour your soap into the mold, allow drying time, and remove the bar, easily. There is no cutting or beveling required. These molds are easy, convenient and fun to use. They are not the ideal choice for making large batches and are recommended to use with the melt and pour soap making method.

Most soap makers will tell you they prefer to use wooden soap molds. Why? These molds can be used for making loaves. A loaf of soap is similar to the size of a bread loaf, it’s just an oversized bar. These molds may have removable ends to allow the loaf to slide through the mold while being cut. This is very convenient and helps for easy removal. Wooden soap molds help to insulate curing soap. They provide nice straight square edges. They’re handy for making large or small batches. If you can’t find a wooden soap mold, build your own with your carpentry skills!

After removing and cutting your soaps, make sure you allow them enough curing time. An approximate curing time of 24 to 36 hours, should be enough. Next, place your soaps on a well air vented drying rack, for good air circulation.

Soap stamps are used to emboss your finished bars. They have a wooden handle with a hard rubber stamping area. Just place the hard rubber end on your individual bars. Use a rubber mallet to strike the wood handle for an imprint of the design. There are many designs of stamps! If you own a soap making business, consider having a stamp designed and made especially for you!

Making homemade soap can be lots of fun! Having the proper equipment saves you time and money. When you learn how to make soap, from a master soap maker, you will discover an abundance of soap making information! Many people make homemade soap for healthful, homemade, skin care.

Printable writing paper is the new rave in many places and it is spreading fast. Teachers, parents and crafters alike are asking, “Why use plain white paper when you can jazz it up a bit with color and pictures?” This puts a new twist on an old story and everyone can benefit from it, and best of all, it is quick, easy and relatively inexpensive. Here are just a few of the ways that you can use this wonderful idea in your own home.

o Teach Home Schooled Children

o Extra Practice at Home

o Special Letters

o Arts and Crafts

o Gifts

o Phone Messages and Grocery Lists

Every parent can benefit by these simple to use templates. They can help get their child excited about learning to write. Some templates mimic the older versions of wide lined paper that younger children use to learn their letters. All parents have to do is just print them off with your child’s favorite characters on them, write a sample alphabet letter or word, and let them practice! What child wouldn’t get excited about writing when they have their friends right there on the paper?

A more crafty approach to using printable writing paper is to use them for arts, crafts and memorabilia. Children can show their progress in a bound notebook by writing letters, their name and stories on the colorful paper. Parents and Grandparents can have a keepsake that grows with the child. You can also use them to supplement scrapbooking pages by using the paper to write dates, occasions and little stories about what is happening in the pictures that follow.

Grocery lists and phone message pads are another great use for the templates. They look nice and and can be found to match just about any style and color you are going for. You can stay organized and have a useful decoration too.

They are not only for children however. Printable writing paper can be found with normal line spacing as well. In today’s fast past electronic world the written letter is becoming a thing of the past. Now you can write a letter to someone special with a little flair. Templates are available with flowers, beautiful borders, hearts and anything else you can think of that will make your written letter just a little more special. Framing a love letter and giving it to your significant other on Valentine’s Day.

Whether you use the paper for teaching, learning, personal letters, decoration or crafts it is up to you. Printable writing paper is available on the internet from many sites. All you have to do is search, pick your favorite style, print and go. In just moments you can perk up any project, letter or room.

Fabric picture panel or fat quarter of fabric
Wadding
Muslin
Backing fabric
Cotton thread white for tacking and a colour or colours to match you fabric panel
Cushion panel inner a standard sixteen inch inner fits most fabric picture panels once made up

Place the picture panel face down, cover it with the wadding, and then with the muslin backing.

Pin all three pieces together, then with a large tacking stitch, tack all three pieces together.

The Cushion Cover Front is now ready to Quilt.

Starting in the centre of the picture panel, sew around the outlines of the design using a small running stitch, the amount of quilting done on the panel is your choice, you may pick out as much detail as you require.

When you are satisfied that the quilting detail is complete.

Trim off any excess wadding which may be over hanging the panel.

Square up the Cushion Cover.

Preparing the Back of the Cushion Cover.

To prepare the back of the Cushion Cover first cut in half the backing panel and then neaten the edges.

Half is then placed face down covering the picture panel, then lay the second half down overlapping the first half across the centre of the panel.

Pin and then stitch all around the edge of the cushion cover.

Turn in the right way and your Cushion Cover is now complete.

This technique can be used on any fabric with the pattern of your choice and will produce some marvelous cushion covers.

It is important to keep the germ-free and safe medical equipment in the hospital. The equipment should get the right sterilization to get the best hygienist medical supply to secure the health of the patients. However, you could apply many techniques to sterilize and disinfect the medical equipment in your hospital.

You could use the effective ways to create the perfect clean medical supplies in the hospital. Ultraviolet-light exposure is popular as the great solution to get the sterile tools in the clinic or hospital. The antibacterial soap would also really efficient to save the medical supplies from any germs. Thus, you would need to know the way to apply some useful techniques to make your equipment safe from some dangerous germs.

1. The first step starts to the easiest way to clean the medical tools from dust, blood, soil or dirt. Using hot water with antibacterial soap would be really efficient to eliminate some organics that might cause infectious microbes.

2. Applying many kinds of disinfecting agent to sterilize the tools on the hospital is also the effective solution. You could use the low-level disinfectants up to the high-level one. If the type of the microorganism on the equipment is not too dangerous, you only need to rub alcohol as the favorite mid-level disinfected solution to save the instruments. Also, you would really need to apply kind of high-level disinfectant to destroy the dangerous microbial life in the medical supplies.

3. The most crucial part of the medical tools in the hospital is the instrument that absolutely requires the perfect sterilization. This instrument has the direct contact with the blood of the patients or the mucous membranes. You should apply the effective sterilization process to eliminate all dangerous microbial life on the instruments.

The certain period to dry heat the instrument is also required. Thus, the use of a chemical sterilizer and a pressurized steam bath is recommended to make the perfect sterilization.

When starting any new hobby there’s a lot to learn. And often, there’s a lot to buy before you get down to the business of practicing that hobby. If you’ve decided that you’d like to have a hive or two in your backyard there are certain basics that you just can’t do without.

Buy New

The best way for a beginner to start is to buy all new equipment and package bees. New equipment will keep you from bringing pests and diseases into your colonies. Getting the bees from a nearby beekeeper can cause problems with swarm control, defensiveness of the colony and re-queening. The new equipment will help you to learn all of the parts of a hive as you put it together. The package bees will help you gain experience in working with a small colony before you branch out into a larger operation. You will be able to see that colony grow from the package you picked up to a real honey producing colony.

Buy both the bees and the equipment – all of your apiary supplies – from a reputable source. You can learn about reputable sources from other beekeepers, beekeeping organizations or groups, and from beekeeping journals. Again, you want clean equipment and healthy bees.

Hives and Tools

You will, of course, need at least one new hive. If you are planning to make your own hive or hives, you will need a hive outer cover, an inner cover, shallow honey supers, a queen excluder, a hive body (or brood chamber), a bottom board, a hive stand, frames and a foundation.

You will need certain equipment to protect yourself. Buy an easy to light smoker and a hive tool. A smoker should always be burning when any beekeeper, new or experienced, opens a hive. If the colony is opened before the smoker is lit, the bees, not the beekeeper, are in control.

Protective Clothing

You will need bee gloves and a hat and veil. Until you learn more about your bees you will always need to wear those gloves. The veil should cover your face and hang down over your shoulders. Most beekeepers use a pith hat – they are usually plastic and look sort of like a safari hat. They’re inexpensive and work great. The veil will be either a folding veil that you can fold up and put in your pocket or a round veil that’s made of metal or plastic.

Beginners should also wear boots with straps that seal the legs of your boots around the legs of your pants so that bees can’t fly up your pants. You should wear long sleeved shirts or suits that cover your arms. Beekeepers should have a jacket that’s often called an “inspector’s jacket” that will protect beekeepers when removing bees from areas that may cause the bees to become defensive. It will come with an attached hat and veil. Lighter color denim blue jeans work to cover the bottom of the beekeepers body. Bees do not like light colors and will not be attracted to light jeans. You can buy pants that are specifically for beekeeping but are not really a necessity.

Once you have collected all of the beekeeping equipment you need, you will be ready to buy your package bees and introduce them to your hives.

It can be even more important with mold removal crawl space scenarios. We get full when we eaty alot.. so does mold and mildew Soap scum, mildew and mold are all pretty much the same and are living organisms. Once mildew and mold eat they will become full just like the rest of us. So after mold, mildew organisms eat to much and become full they create excrement. If left long enough and if placed on an unprotected surface the mold will stain the area. That is another important factor in using a natural cleaner for mold, one that protects the surfaces and removes mold in one solution. If the surface does not contain a protectant or encapsulate for mildew and mold stains then it is definitely going to leaves excrement stains.

Believe it or not when you walk on grass there are mold spores, and they can be tracked in from outside. How does one come to find this out— Well since we did mold testing, when we took tests when someone was mowing the lawn and took a sample outside it was always tons, tons, tons, higher i…. Thank goodness these tests were for outside and not in the residence. The next reason to proving this is using booties when taking clearance and inspection testing.

Black mold and mildew is tracked inside from outdoors all day long, as long as the levels are balance one is okay. Don’t make yourself crazy, if the outdoor levels a re higher than inside your are fine, just keep those carpets dry. One of the biggest aspects of this means learning about lye and other safety procedures, and this should be done before even bothering to attempt to research how the soapmaking process works. Sometimes even experienced soapmakers need to be reminded! Don’t let this all scare you- making soap can be as safe of a craft as any other! However, the key to safety means being informed. Here’s some guidelines and tips:

GET TO KNOW LYE AND RESPECT IT!!!

Soap CANNOT be made without lye. There’s no way around it and if someone told you they did, I hate to break it to you- they lied. Even liquid soap, bath gels, and shampoos contain a form of lye called potassium hydroxide. However lye, alone, is a highly dangerous substance. There’s no sugar coating it- lye can kill you. If you respect it and use it properly everything will be fine. Try not develop a fear of it, and instead focus on handling it properly.

Label your lye water.

If lye is ingested internally, there is a strong likelihood of it being fatal. If you walked away for even for less than a minute and someone walked into your kitchen with a bowl of lye water in a glass, bowl, or pitcher- the results could be deadly! Just to be safe I like to mark my bowl or pitcher with large adhesive label or even better yet, a permanent marker.

Wear your goggles or safety glasses.

Always! If lye water splashes into your eyes, it can blind you. It doesn’t take much… Better to be safe than sorry!

Wear your gloves…. And your clothes!

If it can do that to your eyes, exposed skin isn’t safer either! Lye can eat through skin. Even in tiny amounts it can cause painfully irritating chemical burns. It’s wise to keep a bottle of vinegar around in case of splashes or spills. If this should occur, rinsing with vinegar helps to neutralize the lye. However, care should be taken to prevent this because the vinegar cannot undo damage that has already been done! Even finished soap bars can be irritating until soap has it’s “curing” time- usually a very minimum of four weeks. When making soap, it’s smart to make sure you’re wearing clothes that will protect your skin. Pants, instead of shorts or dresses, and long sleeves are ideal. Don’t forget your feet- remember your shoes!

Keep pets and children away while soapmaking.

It doesn’t take much for lye to be harmful to anyone- it takes even less to bring harm to a small child or pet. If you have little ones running around, it’s best to do your soapmaking in an area they don’t have access to or wait until you have “alone time”. Even with ground rules and with the best behaved children or pets in the world, it’s just not worth the risk.

Only use pure lye.

NEVER attempt to use Draino or any other products that “contain” lye. These products contain other chemical additives that may interfere with the soapmaking process. The results could range from winding up with a soap that is highly irritant to the skin to a lethal concoction that you wouldn’t even want to be in the same room with!

Work in a well ventilated area.

The fumes that rise when lye is mixed with water during the first few minutes can irritate the lungs. Some people are more sensitive to it than others, but a well ventilated area is recommended to anyone. Remember even if it doesn’t bother you at the moment, repeated exposure may bring about a different story. Larger batches of soap are usually give off more potent fumes than smaller ones.

Use an accurate scale.

Never measure your ingredients by volume because it can lead to inaccuracies, leaving you with an irritating “lye heavy” soap. Instead, make sure you use an accurate scale to weigh out your ingredients- one that measures in increments of at least a 10th of an ounce is best. A good postal scale will do just fine. It’s also a good idea to invest in calibration weights for your scale so that you can test it’s accuracy periodically.

Use the right equipment.

Choose your bowls, pitchers, spoons, or whatever will come in contact with your raw soap carefully. Ideally, you want to make sure your supplies aren’t going to be used again for cooking, for an example. You also have to keep in mind that certain metals such as aluminum or copper can have undesired chemical reactions with lye. The best materials to use are stainless steel and heavy duty dishwasher safe plastics. (Even wooden spoons will do, though the lye water will slowly eat at them over time. I lost a good spoon that way!) Some people even recommend using large glass Pyrex measuring cups. However, I personally can’t. I have heard of rare instances where even sturdy Pyrex glass has shattered- in one case I heard of, no one was even in the same room when it happened! In a way it makes sense. Lye water, when first mixed, can reach very high temperatures in an absurdly small amount of time. Then on top of it, over time the potent lye itself may do it’s damage. Over time it may make the glass brittle and create stress on it, though unseen to the human eye.

Use distilled water instead of tap.

Some people say it’s alright to use regular tap water for soapmaking. In most cases, it probably is fine… However tap water can contain various trace metals and minerals that may interact with your lye, giving some unexpected results in your finished soaps. Once again, much better to be safer than sorry!

Mind your pour!

Always make sure to close the container of lye tightly when you’re done. Any moisture that gets in contact with the lye granules will form clumps, which may increase the chance of spills while pouring next time you use it. It may even effect your soap by giving you inaccurate weighings of your ingredients in the end, if enough gets in there. Pouring slowly so you get it right the first shot and don’t have to put any back is also wise. Another thing that can be a hassle sometimes when pouring to weigh your lye is static… Lye sometimes gets a “charge” and granules here and there seem to have a mind of their own when being poured! A quick wiping of the container you’ll be weighing with a dryer sheet first helps with a smoother pour.

Always use a lye calculator- no matter what.

Never assume a recipe that someone gives you, that you find online, or come across in a book is safe. Even if you obtain a recipe from the world’s most trustworthy source, it is always safer to run your recipe through a lye calculator first to make sure you use the proper amount of your ingredients. There are many free and easy to use lye calculators that can be used online or downloaded to your computer, so there’s no excuses!

Stay away from painted surfaces.

It’s best not to do your soapmaking on any painted surfaces. Lye can easily strip paint and damage surfaces. Even on kitchen counters made with a tougher surface material, it’s a good idea to lay down some plastic or freezer paper to protect the area you’re working in. Remember to always keep that vinegar handy as well, just in case!

I know this all must sound terrifying to some and makes you feel as if you need a Hazmat team on standby when learning how to make soap, but believe me it’s not really as bad as it sounds! More people than you’d probably imagine throughout the world make soap every day. If you’re interested in soapcrafting, just do as much research on the subject as possible from as many different sources as you can. There are also several wonderful forums for soapmakers where people can turn to others for advice and to share experiences and ideas. Soapmaking may not be for everyone, but chances are once you make your first successful batch, you’ll be hooked on this craft! Just remember- at any stage in this wonderful hobby, safety always comes first!

A walking foot sewing machine is an industrial-type machine that accurately and precisely sews layers of fabric with no slipping or puckering of seams. The two-piece foot feed moves one side at a time, and appears to be “walking” as it feeds the fabric under the needle.

These machines are perfect for working with multiple layers of heavy fabric, such as upholstery material, and are often used for machine quilting as well. They are usually equipped with straight-stitch and reverse capability, although some also include a zigzag stitch.

Some of the better known models include Reliable, Sailrite, Consew, Pfaff, Alphasew, Adler, Sunstar and Mitsubishi. These tend to be expensive, cumbersome and best suited to commercial applications.

As an alternative to these heavy machines with poor portability, many non-commercial machines can be outfitted with an attachment known as a walking foot attachment. Provided that the machine is well-made and can handle heavier fabrics (such as denim), this is a great alternative for use in machine quilting. Though not a true “walking foot,” this type of machine and attachment is probably a better fit for most home-based machine quilters.

With teeth that mesh with the sewing machine’s feed plate for steady, even pressure, the walking foot attachment will serve to keep the fabric from shifting and the seams smooth and straight. An optional quilting bar attachment can be added, which is helpful in keeping the rows evenly spaced.

These attachments are available for many popular sewing machine models, such as Bernina, Brother, Elna, Pfaff, Singer and Viking. They are relatively inexpensive, many under $30, and are readily available wherever machines are sold.

You can learn how to make natural soap with minimal instruction. Adding lye to water and mixing it in oils is not that hard. After all, that is essentially all that soap really is, it’s a mixture of lye and oils. The process gets complicated by many attempts to explain it in confusing detail with often conflicting ideas. Here are a few tips to remember to get off to a good start with soap making.

It does not take lots of odd components to make fine soap. Look for recipes to get started that contain just a few simple ingredients. It’s difficult to best a mix that just includes coconut, palm and olive oils, along with the right proportions of lye and water too. What’s more, wholesale soap supply outlets make it simple to get your hands on these. With just those simple parts, you can build soap that looks and feels like the most luxurious of soaps and all for not a lot of money or trouble either for that matter.

No exotic ingredients are required to make fabulous soap products. If the basics don’t work then something is badly wrong and more work needs to be done on the process of making soap or the recipe is flawed.

One key factor in soap recipes is the percentage of lye. It’s included in the term lye discount. Basically that means using less lye than would be required to turn all your oils to soap. And you really probably don’t want to turn all the oils to soap. You likely want a tiny bit of oil still unreacted to impart that luxury feel. Getting the lye amount right is simple to do once you know how but it must be just right and not too high or too low either. Then there is the smell factor.

Many soap recipes when made into soap will be unscented even though you put exactly what was called for in the recipe you have. You put in the amount specified in the recipe and still get little or no smell. A shame, since that means you wasted the cost of the scent and still got nothing to show for it.

For essential oils in cold process soap, you’ll need about 0.7 ounces of essential oil per pound of soap. That will be less for mint and spice oils and more for citrus oils. And most citrus oils won’t work very well anyway. You can try citrus oil scents but only a few will endure the soap making process.

Use too much scent oil and it will remain free in the soap. Too little won’t smell at all.

It is quite simple to learn how to make natural soap from soap making books and trial and error. Really the basics are quite simple. Moving beyond the basics to build soap to market through a soap business or to experience spa quality soap means more study and experience.
